A variety of French origin, it was imported into Friuli from the Gironde (Bordeaux) at the beginning of the 1800’s. According to the naturalist Petit-Lafitte, the name “Merlot” comes from the fact that the fruit is hungrily sought by blackbirds. In any case, the intense black of the grape is highly reminiscent of the plumage of that familiar bird. Our Merlot is a “cru” of Merlots made by a pure wine making process whose maturation and refining times vary from 2 to 5 years.
